The
Lebanese National Resistance.
Since
the outbreak of the Lebanese-Palestinian war on April 13, 1975, Abu Arz has
toiled to unite the various factions of the Lebanese Resistance in order to
intensify its efficiency on the one hand, and to prevent internal clashes
among them on the other. He contributed greatly in creating the Lebanese Forces
which saw the light of day in the Guardians of the Cedars headquarters in
Achrafiyeh, and continued to hold its weekly meetings there, until it resorted
later to hold them in the office of Cheikh Bachir Gemayel in Achrafiyeh and
eventually in the War Council premises in Qarantina.
The military
activity of the Lebanese Forces succeeded in promoting its chief, Cheikh Bachir,
to the Presidency of the Republic in the wake of the Israeli incursion that
reached Beirut in the summer of 1982, and the ousting of the Syrian troops
and Palestinian organizations.
However,
after the assassination of Cheikh Bachir and the accession of others to the
leadership of the Lebanese Forces, the struggle for leadership among the senior
personalities grew to the point of splitting it into factions and internal
conflicts that destroyed it and dashed all the hopes it represented.
